US retail investors holding international dividend-paying stocks in their brokerage accounts have a new date to circle on their calendars. When a foreign corporation distributes cash, the mechanics of withholding taxes and record dates dictate exactly how much money actually lands in an American account.

On October 14, 2026, Telefônica Brasil S.A.—the major telecommunications operator known locally by its brand name Vivo—formally notified the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) through a Form 6-K filing that its board of directors has approved a gross distribution of R$450 million (Brazilian reais) in interest on capital.

For global investors, the key to this transaction lies in the local tax structure. In Brazil, "interest on capital" (known locally as Juros sobre Capital Próprio, or JCP) is a specific corporate distribution mechanism that allows companies to deduct payout expenses from their local corporate tax liabilities. However, unlike traditional dividends, this distribution is subject to a standard 17.5% withholding income tax rate in Brazil. According to the company's SEC filing dated October 14, 2026, this leaves an estimated net distribution of R$371.25 million for shareholders.

The board established that the gross amount per share is initially set at R$0.14081834570, resulting in an estimated net amount of R$0.11617513520 per share after the local withholding tax. The company noted that these per-share figures are subject to minor adjustments before the cutoff date depending on any share buybacks executed under its active corporate program.

To secure a piece of this payout, investors must hold the shares at the close of trading on October 26, 2026. Starting October 27, 2026, the shares will trade "ex-interest" on the exchanges. The actual cash distribution is scheduled to be paid to investors by April 30, 2027, with the company’s executive board tasked with finalizing the exact payment date.
